This is for all the anxious ones. For everyone who feels wrought up in their spirit. The God-breathed words were meant to give you life…
This rendering of 1 Peter 3:4-6 all of us could really, really use. Maybe take a moment and grab some hot tea or reheat your coffee (smile) and read this just as many times as you can? Let the words work themselves into the inner recesses of your heart…spiritual lungs need fresh air, so breathe deep.
Let not yours be the [merely] external adorning with [elaborate] interweaving and knotting of the hair, the wearing of jewelry, or changes of clothes; But let it be the inward adorning and beauty of the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible and unfading charm of a gentle and peaceful spirit, which [is NOT anxious or WROUGHT UP, but] is very precious in the sight of God.
For it was thus that the pious women of old who hoped in God were [accustomed] to *beautify themselves* and were submissive to their husbands [adapting themselves to them as themselves secondary and dependent upon them].
It was thus that Sarah obeyed Abraham [following his guidance and acknowledging his headship over her by] calling him lord (master, leader, authority). And you are now her true daughters if you do right and let nothing terrify you [NOT giving way to HYSTERICAL FEARS or letting anxieties unnerve you].
This world it’s terrifying and our inner selves almost come undone, buckling under all of life’s pressure, but for the daughter of the true King there is Way to freedom. There is a way to peace. The beginning of 1 Peter 3 begins this way….
Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands…
Likewise? Like what? What is Peter referring to? Wives are to be subject to their own husbands like what? To gather that knowledge you have to keep backing up to the end of chapter 2 which ends this way….
For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
This how a woman is able to have a soul not wrought up, a heart that does not give way to hysterical fear like Jesus entrusted Himself to God the Father, so does she. When we entrust ourselves, our lives, our husbands, our children, and all we hold dear to God, we will find the gift He gives unfurling within us. The very precious gentle, quiet, peaceful spirit, a striking unmatched beauty that will not fade with the turning of time.
