He sent His Word and healed them and saved them our of all their destructions. Psalm 107:20
We are carried upon the Word through all manner of difficulty… It carries us through dark valleys and high mountains, through deepest sorrow and the heights of our joy.
There is no Word like it! And I see the Holy Spirit stirring His people more and more to join the crazy ones who think memorizing whole passages and books of the Bible is to our good. Every time I hear a whisper of the goodness of God in memorizing the Word it makes my soul dance giddy for this has been the practice of my life for 13 amazing years.
Oh how I love your law; it is my meditation all the day!
Psalm 119:97
How do you meditate on something all the day? Sweet friend, you memorize it! This is the Psalm 119 wonder…how could one man…one woman be enthralled so? Be drawn into the presence of Christ so much that you hunger for Him and pant for His words? So undignified and marvelously free is such a one.
Jesus is the why of memorizing and one.verse.at.a.time. is the how. Pile just one verse on top of another Monday through Friday review Saturday and repeat the pattern. You would memorize Phillippians 1 in a month or so then spend two weeks reviewing the chapter….think you can’t memorize a book in a year, think again. The question really is not can you…but do you want to? Is your desire fierce enough to propel you through…because when your eyes are fixed on Jesus and He is really all you want this discipline becomes sure grace that carries you through life and all it’s trenches.
The times of deep trial…the times of suffering…these moments we avoid with desperation are coming…and memorizing is like life’s prep work. This is how you resist the devil and stand firm in your faith like Jesus did. When you know the Word in an abiding way and it becomes your sword, your mightiest defense, your bread, the choicest of food, the pure sweetness of your life. And this gift is yours for the taking.
