I glance around and see light dancing on the horizon. Earlier I had caught my doll baby standing mid-aisle filling up with joy dancing her own dance. Little face full of smile, catching my eye an unabashedly dancing on…. Caught her in the pure state of her delight, because…
What delights us can’t ever be stifled. What brings deep joy just can’t be hidden.
It’s the one secret you just can’t keep. Whatever you delight in will instruct your life…you can’t keep your feet from moving in and toward your joy. Whatever it is…you move toward it. Whatever it is not you move away from it.
And I hear the Psalmists pen scratching down the Words…I rejoice at your Word as one who finds great spoil…The Lord is my portion, I have promised to keep His Words…Oh how I love your Law; it is my meditation all the day….
The question…do you dance in your joy as passionately as my daughter dances in hers? Is our God such delight that when someone catches you enthralled in Him, you just can’t stop, you just invite them to join you, to see how good He is? Or does the strain of time, circumstance keep us from drawing nearer to the One who spilled His precious blood.
It was her eyes that said Mommy this is happiness to me. Her smile that assured me this was really living. Our clocks all worn out by time just keep on clicking one minute to the next…and if we’re just spending our days clicking here and there, filling up time with frivolity, we are spending them fruitlessly. We sometimes lose our delight. Our joy gets misplaced. That’s when we don’t esteem Him; that’s when our lips fail to open and speak His name.
It’s no way to live, really, it isn’t, because there’s this dance you get to enjoy, this delight. All consuming pleasure is birthed out of loving God as your highest joy, the preeminent delight, the Delight of delights. The way back is etched all over the pages of Scripture. Dance again. Psalm 119, our instruction for the week. The way back to joy is always Jesus.
