You know the sound of a clock ticking that steady rhythm coming again in relentless succession pressing time forward hard, no weight of resistance withstands its declaration.
The clock rang in a decade of being a mommy for me a few days ago. I stood in that moment of time awed. Remembering both what Chris & I hoped would be some day and realizing the prayer came true and keeps coming true faster than my mind grasps.
That firstborn still lays his head contentedly on my shoulder and my husband, my favorite ever, looks at me with knowing eyes that look and words to match it, “You might be tired and worn out, but soak it in my love because it will not always be this way.” And for that moment as I sit with that firstborn boy the first sign of strength the one who opened the womb whose his soft curls crush against my arm, the same arm that held him as I nursed, I am in that moment thankful for the weight of time that it moves neither faster nor slower that it weighs down a moment to cement a memory that by grace will remain for many more tomorrows. By grace that season of sitting just so with that boy child of mine will end, and he will step into manhood and all that comes with it. I cannot stop the clock. This realization brings purpose and clarity to each new day given. These are the moments given to impress upon all four of our little arrows the always true Word of God.
At this time in our culture that truth might be up for debate, but we serve a risen Savior who reigns sovereign over time and stands outside of it. The Lord need not defend His Word for it to be explicitly true and able and accomplishing. Human intellect is not to be trusted more than Spirit given words; the saved know this. And those who are not yet cannot comprehend it. Debates with depraved minds will always be lost, because they are lost. The Lord did not call the way narrow for no reason.
But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God’s word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God. And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.2 Corinthians 4:2-4
This is the time we have with our children. This is the moment in time God has ordained for every one of your little ones to be yet under your roof. This is the time given to memorize much with them and to talk about everything. I do mean everything, because where you fail to disciple this world will not. We cannot wait until we think they are ready for truth we must steadily give them full doses of truth all of the time. They were born needy for Truth and even the smallest among us should not be denied. The sooner they know Christ the better and the indwelling Spirit accomplishes the purposes of God where we could never reach fulfilling the miracles in the heart we never could.
Their salvation should be ever in our prayers and on our minds because when they come to Jesus for salvation the Spirit of Christ changes everything for them. We are never dictators of our children; we are the guide to the sovereign Lord who will ever use His Lordship in their lives for His good and their good.
