Life moves so quickly. You feel it too, don’t you?! It seems no sooner than you settle into one season, it’s on to the next, that’s in weather as well as life. The days hit the ground running. The only way I have yet learned to slow it is through thankfulness. Miss Ann Voskamp teaches spectacularly on the subject. God’s Word inundates us with it. Be thankful in every circumstance. I haven’t learned how to do that yet, not consistently.
Discontent is cancer of the soul; it spreads rapid. For Moms: Annoyed that our sleep was interrupted, we never get enough of it. Irritated that our little ones are interrupting. Why isn’t there any time for…? If only you would go away for while then I could get …. done. It doesn’t matter the age of the kid either… The tune of the thought just changes a bit. For young wives: Beyond ready for that first house… When will we have enough money, time, stuff…?For all of us: Why do we have to wait so long for …? It sounds ugly to write those fleeing thoughts (or perhaps lingering thoughts) down, but don’t turn your eye away yet. Truth is the sour attitude that settles in our soul spoils the days of others, especially those entrusted to our care. We can either excuse our sin or repent of it. Repentance is the sweet path, the way of the Jesus seeker.
So moms instead of brushing their needy hands and hearts away, gaze into them as if the whole day hinges on whether or not they know they are fully loved, because in a real way it does. Young wives choose to praise that young man instead of tempting him to feel that his provision isn’t enough. He is working hard; this is difficult ground to till. Instead be thankful, learn contentment! Our Father knows our need. To us all let us believe that it is blessed to wait on the Lord! His Word is true.
This is when the beauty of a gentle & quiet spirit is really seen, when a spirit at rest deeply blesses a life, overwhelming their heart with love because you have fully listened, fully seen, fully engaged in who they are. It is best to pour out your life for another…emptied to be filled…to realize that contentment lies right there in the midst of your calling rather than outside of it.
The days don’t rewind, but we can ask the Writer to pen the new dawns His way…. Maybe we won’t get as much done, but plans fulfilled & people forgotten is never fruitful. Truth frees and sitting at feet is always better. Maybe we don’t understand what kind of rest we really need…..
