I slice apples, kiss boo-boos, teach letters, numbers, colors, wash & fold, bathe and dress, day after day…. Life on repeat. Even if your rhythm is different than mine. Even if it reads more like… get up fast, shower, get dressed, kids fed and dressed, to daycare, plug away wishing the hours would hurry, pick them up, dinner, bed, do it again. No matter where we live we are often in life on repeat. How do we keep the joy from being sucked from us? How do we look at the clock telling us it is time to wash and oil potatoes for dinner prep again and not bemoan the ordinary labor, especially in a world telling us that everything has to be BIG, noticed, recognized, pinterest-worthy?
What is the thrill of hope? How could a weary world rejoice when so many souls are spent dry? The song could read the weary SOUL…rejoices? What makes us rejoice? The thrill of hope swaddled. The God Man humbling Himself into flesh…Jesus. His presence. Abiding there. The place we belong is under His wings. It is what separates us from all the world. His distinguishing presence. He makes the wearied soul fill up with wonder as our hungry eyes feast on the daily bread…the daily bread He offers. We pray along with the Psalmist….
Open my eyes that I may behold wonderful things out of your Law.
Psalm 119:18
The weary becoming wonder-full…living on His Word, the very best kind of bread, the sweet of sweets. Meditation. The discipline of remaining in His Word…this is how slicing apples, dropping off children, life on repeat…keeps its joy. We must always be coming to Jesus… That’s where the wonders are. That’s where the wearied are made full.
