She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.”Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates.
Proverbs 31:27-31
There is beauty in wiping bottoms, a glory in folding towels, a ministry in wiping salt water streams off reddened faces and kissing boo boos. There is inherent worth in motherhood that culture would dismiss with a wave of the hand or a roll of the eyes, but our God sets His eyes on the weak and sleepless. His gaze stays on the mom just doing mom things and He doesn’t ever roll His eyes at our lives…
I imagine he wells with tears with us, He feels our happiness and pain too. Is He not a Father and more righteous than we? Whose love surpasses His and in what valley or peak does He not dwell? Isn’t His home and heart with the lowly and little esteemed? And isn’t a mom treasure to Him…he was a boy after all and He loved His mother. He loves us…would you give the very imprint of your nature to the world through a womb you cared nothing for? God doesn’t either; astounding grace rests on the mom bowing body and life to Him, astounding grace chases those wandering far from His heart, our true home.
He Himself our Rest, and we need to lay our lives upon Him, lay our children upon Him. Give to Him this sacred work, and believe…exercise faith. Work out your faith in this glorious Gospel IN your mommyhood. Give your children the gift of a mom who rests in Jesus and not a mom who rests on perfectly ordered schedules, pinterest projects, and Facebook personas….
Give them a mom happy in The Lord and you will offer your sincerest worship right there in your actual life.
Give them a mom who knows well she has nothing to give save grace alone. Give them a mom whose anchor holds tight in Jesus. A mom who is not concerned so much with the fit of her jeans as much as she is concerned with how Christ fits upon her life. A mom whose covering amounts to more than the latest fashion trend…a mom whose covering is Christ’s own work.
Mommyhood isn’t life’s greatest performance it’s among one of life’s greatest graces.
It comes humbling pride to the ground. Digging idle living out and replacing it with diligence and a little dirt under the nails. There abides boundless freedom for a mom who interprets her mothering through the capable cross of Jesus, who realize the children aren’t a cross to bear; they are gifts helping to whittle away the stubborn grasp of sin.
